Find yourself constantly dreaming of your next trip to the airport? Us too. While international travel may be a while off, we can still dare to dream and plan out our next trip away. Read our post-lockdown bucket list blog series for our recommendations for must-see cities and towns.
For our fourth location, we're heading for Amsterdam, Netherlands.
With half of the Netherlands sitting 3 feet above sea level, Amsterdam stands on 11 million wooden poles that support the buildings from sinking.
A city dedicated to its eccentric restaurants, beautiful surroundings, and wealth of world-class museums, not to mention, the city’s renowned local beer, Amsterdam is one of the top places to visit post-lockdown.
Take a wheely exciting bike ride around the city, cycling is the most reliable way for any visitor to see explore what this place has to offer. There is around 515km of dedicated cycle lanes, Amsterdam is rated the world’s 2nd bike-friendly city. Hop on your bike and on route come across the iconic sites such as Rijksmuseum, Amstel river, Albert Cuyp, and why note pop into the Heineken Experience – be rude not to! You can download more friendly and easy-to-follow cycling route maps on I Am Amsterdam.
Vintage lovers in need of some wardrobe inspiration, listen up. Located in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, Haarlemmerstratt was voted the nicest shopping street back in 2011. The street is filled with unique independent gems from boutiques, salons, restaurants. You can even visit Amsterdam’s oldest functioning cinema, The Movies, founded in 1912. This street will appeal to even the world-weary of world travellers. You are guaranteed to find a special purchase in this alternative shopping district.
Home to a variety of world-famous museums, Amsterdam has museums and galleries for every interest. The Stedelijk Art Museum displays 90,000 works from the early 20th and 21st centuries. Expect pieces by Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Gerrit Rietveld, Nola Hatterman, Vincent van Gogh to name a few. The 2012 renovation added a new wing that’s dubbed “the bathtub” by locals because it looks like a giant, shiny-white bathtub plopped smack in Museumplein. Tourists and history heads can also view The Anne Frank museum. The museum preserves the annex where the family lived and showcases objects, photographs, and historical documents from the time, piecing together a moving narrative of the events that took place.
Like most trips away, we are always keen on restaurants and nightlife, everyone deserves to unwind. To truly embrace the country you are in, trying the cuisine is a must. Amsterdam has an array of Dutch restaurants, such as RIJKS, Restaurant Moeders, Café Loetje.
Try out the local’s favourites from Thick Dutch fries, Stroopwafel, Bitterballen, and much more Dutch delicacies.
Lastly, grab a seat at one of Amsterdam’s pub, Hannekes Boom’s waterfront spot’s bright picnic tables and you’ll instantly feel like you’re on holiday. Boats pull up to the dock, swimmers jump in for a dip and locals meet to drink, chat and soak up the friendly vibes as the sun goes down. Absolute bliss!
